Yachtmaster Ocean
This is a course in astro-navigation and world-wide meteorology which also reveals the mysteries of the sextant. It assumes a knowledge of all the subjects covered in the other shorebased courses, and includes the following:
• The earth and the celestial sphere
• the PZX triangle
• the sextant
• meridian altitude sights
• sun, star and other sights
• compass checking for deviation
• satellite navigation systems
• great circle and rhumb line sailing
• meteorology
• passage planning and passage making
• communications at sea
This course normally takes a minimum of 40 hours study time. The complete syllabus is contained in the RYA publication, G15 - RYA Sail Cruising Scheme.
This is available as an evening class starting on 11 October 2007 and running until March 2008. Fee £160
Also available over 6 days, October to March. Dates: 13 Oct, 10 Nov, 1 Dec, 12 Jan, 9 Feb, 22 March. Fee £300.
